This course explores the unique role of performance art, which evolved with, through and against the dominant theories in the last century and unpacks some of its central binaries: black/white, male/female, straight/queer, west/east, human/other. Students analyze solo works from international performance artists in relationship with key shifts in the transformations of identity at the beginning of the new century by viewing performances, reading what artist interviews and performance theory.

Using a selection of international plays from different theatrical periods, theoretical and critical essays and theories of performance, this course introduces students to core areas of theater studies: the movement from page to stage, approaches to theater history and performance theory, and the relationship between the theatrical event and the world. Students will become familiar with the principles and practice of close reading, analysis, critical thinking, and argumentation concerning a wide range of plays, performances and criticism.
